LINKAGES BETWEEN AFRICAN VILLAGES AND GLOBAL VILLAGES   Leave a comment

African villages have cultures and so are the global villages. Many global villages are emerging as cultures, and as cultures they use telecomunications and information technologies to reassert their identities on the world stage. Global villages share many qualities and to somwe extent facilities with more traditional communities (global villages). Global villages can comprise individuals scattered around the globe who use the global communications and transportation infrastructure to remain in touch.

For example, ethnic groups separated by historical migration patterns can reconnect with their roots. Linkages do exist as observed between the American Peace Corps in several Zambian (African ) villages. These two groups share a number of things, such as culture, language and traditions. Those from the global villages learn, see and understand the challlenges (e.g. poor educational and health facilities, poverty, etc) that the African villages face. From the lessons learnt and experiences from African villages, the global villages can find ways allevieting the problems of the African villages. So linkages do exist between the two villages under discussion.

AFRICAN TRADITIONAL EDUCATION SYSTEM   Leave a comment

African traditional educational system would not be adequate for modern society because:

The needs of the society are changing . With increasing ICT facilities being deployed to all sectors of the economy, Zambia needs to replace traditional pedagogical practices. However, there are challenges such as the high cost of computer hardware and software; weak infrastructure, especially in rural areas, lack of human skills and knowledge in ICT, and  lack of relevant software appropriate and cuturally suitable for Zambia.

ICT is an instrument for the economic and technological development in the 21st century, therefore Zambia, being part of the changing world ” modern society” can not afford to lag behind the digital line.

Some of the reasons why early Europeans did not acknowledge African education  are as follows:

  • They observed that there was no one,  single indigenous form of education (or culture) in Africa but rather a dynamic of ethnic, historical and social factors that often make generalizations problematic or simply inadquate (Bray 2000: 27).
  • Indigenous education was viewed as means to an end; social responsibility, spiral and moral values ; participation in ceremonies, rituals; imitation, recitation demonstration; sport epic; poetry; reasoning; riddles; praises; songs; story telling; proverbs; folktales; togues twisters; dance; music;
